Citizens living in fear
Of late our newspapers have been carrying numerous reports of various crimes that have been taking place all over the country. Almost every day some gruesome crime is taking place. The latest of these gruesome crimes is the gang rape and murder of marketing executive, Chee Gaik Yap in Sg.Petani,Kedah recently.
I just wonder where our country is really heading to. We can hardly go anywhere without fear of assault, robbery, rape and even murder. Now even being caged in the home behind locked doors, grilles, expensive alarms and security guards does not protect us from these criminals.
On top all these are the road accidents and road bullies. These crimes are increasing by the day and we do not see signs that they will be brought under control anytime in the near future
Where has to all the lessons on morality in schools gone to? Something has terribly gone wrong with our education system. It has failed to instill good morals, good behavior and civility in our young men and women. Aggression and violence against ordinary peace-loving citizens seems to be the norm of the day.
The police and other law enforcement agencies appear to be ineffective in bringing the situation under control. Those with power, influence and wealth seem to get away with all sorts of crime.
Our leaders must take immediate action to check these unhealthy practices before they become our national culture. The police, anti-corruption agency, attorney general and the judiciary must regain their independence to act without fear and favor. They must be made to understand that their priorities and loyalties are to the rakyat and rakyat alone.
Law and order must prevail, failing which will only result in thugs taking over the running of the country.
